Wisconsin State Journal parent Lee Enterprises inks app deal - The Business Journal of Milwaukee:

part of the joint venture that publishes the Wisconsin State Journal and other daily newspapers, has hired Kansas City software company Handmark Inc. to develop and support mobile applications for its newspapers and online media outlets.

Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Handmark Inc. creates applications for mobile phones and targets media companies.

Lee and Handmark said Thursday that they will work together to launch similar professional sports apps with other local newspapers, as well as mobile apps for coverage of college sports.

Report: iPad Apps Proliferate | Wireless Week

App analytics company Distimo says available apps for the iPad are increasing by the day. Distimo today released its monthly report that focuses on the Apple App Store for the iPad and iPhone in the United States.

According to the report, the number of applications in the Apple App Store for iPad has grown to 4,870 since the release of the iPad on April 3. In the last two weeks alone, the number of iPad applications has grown by 32.7 percent.

The largest application category on the iPad was Games with 1,577 titles (32 percent), followed by Entertainment and Books with 455 and 396 titles, respectively.

The App Store appears to be getting more costly as well. Of the 186,414 applications in the Apple App Store for iPhone, 73 percent are paid, while 80 percent of the 4,870 applications in the Apple App Store for iPad are paid.

iPad apps are more expensive than those for the iPhone and iPod touch. An application in the Apple App Store for iPhone costs $3.82 on average, as opposed to $4.67 in the Apple App Store for iPad.

Reliance has got into an strategic alliance with with GetJar, the popular mobile application store.

Under this alliance, all 100 Million Reliance subscribers gets to access all the 65,000 free apps present at GetJar.

This will be carried out via a special GetJar apps store on Reliance's premier VAS Platform, R-World. And the App Store will contains a various genres of applications ranging from games, social networking, sports, entertainment and productivity applications.

There will be no charges on the application download and its use, however there will be a data charge of 50 paise/MB from Reliance.

As webOS grows up, developers learn more about the platform, and together we build commonality into our apps. I have talked about various gestures and practices that are both built in, and have emerged.

I have seen some very interesting advanced uses of our notification system recently and wanted to share.

First up is birdwatch a “background app” that polls your Twitter account and when new tweets come along, they are shown in a dashboard component at the bottom of the screen. You can simply tap that area to move through your tweets. Very nice indeed, and something I would love to see in our email client, and in the Facebook app. The feature has been added to our list.

It is a great and simple example of how you don't need a full app for every use case, and remember: those areas are DOM windows too so you can make them do a lot! We have seen other core examples such as the media player controls, and I also look forward to seeing the Facebook app be able to accept/deny friend requests right there. What would your users want to do rather than be sent into the main app indeed? That is the question.
